Mexico’s CMX hitting their stride in the US

If you’re not familiar with CMX Cinemas, you will be soon. In the past year, the Mexican luxury exhibitor acquired Florida-based Cobb Cinemas and began buying and flipping abandoned US cinema space to create new, state-of-the-art dine-in venues.

And yes, as you surely guessed, ES&T is pleased to be working with the CMX brand and its exemplary team as they take the States by storm.

In Skokie, Illinois, CMX is crafting quite a unique cinema experience with two different spaces that bookend the Westfield Old Orchard Shopping Center, a luxury indoor-outdoor shopping and entertainment venue. The first is a full service dine-in model, while the other will offer a market-style foodservice venue where moviegoers can grab-n-go their goodies before heading for their seats. CMX Old Orchard Market, as it will be called, is scheduled to open late spring of 2018.

Old Orchard boasts premium screens as well as Dolby Atmos sound, which provides for speakers along the ceiling paired with subwoofers in the back of the auditorium. Atmos allows moviegoers to experience an immersive sound experience even in larger auditoriums.

Working against the grain to retrofit the CMX model into existing cinema space, ES&T designed, furnished and installed digital projection and sound to complete the front ends. In fact, ES&T continues to upgrade the luxury recliner seating as CMX continues to provide the most comfortable cinema experience for their customers.

In addition to the exhibition equipment, our team also installed a range of fixtures including front end screen systems, equipment bases, battery backups and CineQC, a remote-operated cinema quality control system that essentially creates a ‘smart theatre’ with digital access to all systems.

The Old Orchard dine-in venue opened just in time for Christmas of this year, as the chain continues to redesign neglected cinema spaces across the country, including Manhattan, Miami, Florida and a location at the Mall of America in the Minneapolis-St. Paul region of Minnesota. Just prior to opening the Old Orchard dine-in, CMX debuted a theatre at Closter Plaza in New Jersey, a stone’s throw from New York City.
